Kris is now 9 days overdue and is about as happy about this as you would guess. With all the uncertainty that surrounds the baby-making process — timing of conception, gender of the child, start of labor — it feels somewhat strange to know for certain that the process will come to a head (quite literally) tomorrow when Kristina is induced.
See you on the other side.

I suppose the odds were not in our favor — 9 out of 10 car seats are improperly installed — but it was still a little disheartening to find out that one has a vital piece of safety equipment installed wrong. We’re bright people, and we followed the instructions provided, but we still failed. The people at the Car Seat Clinic were able to get us setup correctly in the end. At least we got this taken care of before the baby arrived.
If you’re wondering what the problem was with our original installation, it was simply a matter of tightness. It took 3 people at the Clinic simultaneously compressing and tightening the various parts to get it to an adequate state.

This morning we had our tour of the hospital where we’re planning to give birth. With our pre-natal class scheduled for Saturday, it’s beginning to feel like this baby is really going to happen, instead of being just another excuse to redecorate.
With all apologies to my very pregnant wife.

The whole Baby Registry thing seemed like a good idea at the time. Aside from the fact that we are currently fighting the rest of the known universe for bandwidth to the Toy”R”Us website in advance of Christmas, their Baby Registry infrastructure is proving woefully inadequate. You’d like examples?
- the online inventory is not linked in any meaningful way with individual store inventories. Those little “available in-store vs. online” indicators? Lies, damned lies, and perhaps even statistics!
- the number of items already purchased is updated infrequently at best: we’ve already had collisions where people have bought the same items because the website has not been updated, and that’s with a pretty small sample size (4).
- Toys”R”Us doesn’t/can’t/won’t actually tell you who sent a particular gift.
If you are one of the exceedingly generous people who has already sent us a gift via Toys”R”Us, can I humbly ask that you call/write/email to let us know? Thanks.

Many people have asked about/for one, so Kris and I have set up a baby registry.

The nursery is almost finished. We are so far ahead of the game, it’s scary.

Kev came by for dinner on Saturday and helped me get my “new” Series 1 Tivo talking to the world over it’s network card. The Tivo is now doing its thing, and has even begun suggesting things for me to watch. Desperate Housewives == Thumbs Down!

The engine of our car is now in many pieces on the floor of my in-laws’ garage. All I can say is that I’m thankful to have an engineer for a father-in-law. We would have paid for the car many times over in repair costs were it not for Don, and I’m pretty sure this most recent engine failure would have precipitated buying an entirely new vehicle were it not for his mechanical intercession. Thanks, Don.

There’s a theory in medicine called the hygiene hypothesis, the pop culture sound byte version of which is that kids who eat dirt are generally healthier than children who don’t. As a soon-to-be-parent and former mud-pie line cook, this idea appeals to me.
If we can apply this same logic to general childhood development, can people please stop trying to sanitize life for their children? I know you mean well, but if you’re not careful, your child is likely to be felled by the first powerful idea they encounter.
