Sharbot Lake

Kris and I have returned from our annual camping pilgrimage to Sharbot Lake, but unlike last year, there is photographic evidence to confirm the bacon-powered fun.

Weekend Redux

Posted 3 years, 4 months ago at 14:50. 1 comment

Kristina and I have started going to the Carp Farmers’ Market every Saturday. They have a great selection of non-traditional meats, as well as grass-fed beef, local cheeses, and, of course, some fantastic produce. This week, representatives from the Ottawa Food Security Council were handing out copies of their Ottawa Buy Local Map. Supporting local farmers is a good way to reduce your ecological footprint and participate in the One-Tonne Challenge.

Also: tasty!

For instance, we had my Dad over for dinner tonight to celebrate our local bounty. The menu featured barbecued local bison, local corn, local salad, cherry tomatoes from our own garden, and fresh blueberry pie for dessert.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, leftovers are calling.

Freecycle

Posted 3 years, 4 months ago at 10:36. 2 comments

Those who haven’t already heard of Freecycle should give it a look. It’s a great concept, and has already paid off for us.

Case in point: we had a old washer & dryer that we needed to get rid of. To recycle them at an appliance depot in Ottawa would have cost us money (not a lot, but still), and they would be automatically scrapped at the depot despite both being fully functional, albeit 20 years old. Thanks to Freecycle, we no longer have an extra washer & dryer cluttering up our garage, some young family gets a leg up on life, and the local landfill is a little less full.

There are Freecycle groups everywhere, so what are you waiting for?

Happy Canada Day

Posted 3 years, 4 months ago at 14:09. 0 comments

Ottawa is usually a pretty sleepy little town, but man, do we know how to party come Canada Day.

Kris and I ventured downtown today to take in the spectacle. Kev has pictures that tell the approximate story of our day, right down to the time spent at Woody’s where we at opposite ends of the bar and didn’t run into each other. Kev’s pictures of the fireworks are phenomenal, especially when you consider that a) he didn’t have a tripod, and b) he was no doubt drunk out of his tree at the time.

Black and white and wed all over

Posted 3 years, 4 months ago at 10:59. 1 comment

Wedding season is officially in full swing. Cheryl and Dave, two friends who we met during our time in Guelph, tied the knot today at Strathmere. Dave’s Scottish heritage was on full display…well, not in the way you are thinking, or at least not until much later in the evening.

The rest of the photos are online. To spice things up, I took the majority of the photos in black & white. I think they turned out pretty well. I love the stark definition and contrast, especially on a day when most of the subjects, i.e. my friends, were wearing black and/or white.

Érabliere Proulx

There were precisely 3 hours of sun this past weekend, and Kris and I managed to time our trip to the sugar bush perfectly so as to coincide with them. We didn’t bring the camera, but you probably don’t want to see the heaping plates of maple-soaked pork products we put away at their buffet anyway. Mmmm…crackling.

Tob-ow-gganning

Posted 3 years, 9 months ago at 15:56. 1 comment

This may not come as news to most people, but I am officially old.

We hosted our 3rd annual tobogganing party last night. Unlike previous years, I did not bounce back up to the top of the hill between runs, but instead took longer and longer to lick my wounds after each spill, and there were many: both wounds and spills.

Thanks to everyone who came out. Hopefully you’re feeling better today than I am.

Kev loaned us Shaun of the Dead. The film was great, causing even Kristina to laugh. Much of the cast is carried over from the excellent UK T.V. series, Spaced, that I happened upon a while ago. Highly recommended.

Dinner is ruined

Posted 3 years, 9 months ago at 19:25. 0 comments

It took a few days, but I finally succumbed to Kristina’s killer cold as well. It completely incapacitated me yesterday, and forced us to cancel our Valentine’s Day reservations at my favorite restaurant in Ottawa tonight.

Quoth the Raven

Turns out that friends of mine from Guelph are good friends with a former co-worker of mine from back in my Ingenia days.

After a leisurely game of shinny in the afternoon today with the aforementioned Guelph friends who were up visiting for the weekend, I had a chance to catch up with Ilker at Zaphod’s, where he met up with us afterwards for beverages.

Thinking back, Ilker and I spent a surprising amount of time together in high school, between the basketball courts at Mutchmor and the weekend sessions of Shadowrun.

For those who are interested, you’ll both be happy to know that Ilker is alive and well and living in Ottawa, working at JDS doing QA in their manufacturing process…and puts back quarts of 50 like nobody’s business.

Want Ad

With Axe moving out to Vancouver to pursue full-time disc gol…er, gainful employment, I’m currently accepting applications for a new movie buddy in the Ottawa area. The applicant must possess the following qualities:

  • a deep and abiding love of bad movies;
  • a fundamental understanding of the differences between a good-bad movie and a bad-bad movie, and a willingness to argue your line of reasoning on the subject;
  • the ability to overlook my choice of concession purchases, at least until you know enough to properly make fun;
  • …and then some.

Note: applications stencilled in Sharpie on the back of disc golf discs will not be processed.
