Bad

Coop: “I think I had a girlfriend once who used to live around here.”
Will: “This is a pretty bad area.”
Coop: “Well, she was a pretty bad girlfriend.”

Squash lost tonight. It was pretty ugly, and I don’t want to talk about it.

Rhymes with nothing

Winter indoor ultimate season has begin anew, so get ready for more boring talk of over-ambitious decision making, ill-advised hammers, and general loathing

…except we won.

The as-of-yet-unnamed team orange was ahead 15 to 5 at halftime, and we really didn’t let up the pressure in the second half. I’m so pleased right now that I won’t even mention how badly my ankle and groin hurt.

Today’s local nominees for the Darwin Awards: the two truckers who thought that parking their rig in the right-hand lane of Baseline at Greenbank this evening at 8:30pm with no lights on, and then attempting to diagnose whatever was wrong with the hitch/trailer by crouching in the lane still left open to traffic to look under the truck, was a good idea. Like everyone else, I always drive the *ahem* speed limit on Baseline, and I narrowly avoided these two lunatics, but traffic was non-existent at the time. Best of luck getting your truck fixed, boys, if you’re still alive to need it.

I was briefly up to level 9, but after a series of bad rounds, I was dropped back to, and am currently firmly mired at, a ranking of 8 in the Rumble Pit. How demoralizing is that? I think I need to face the fact that I am never going to beat illiterate, punk kids online at Halo 2. If only their parents had bought them books instead of extra Xbox controllers!

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but I think something may be wrong with the moon.

More ultimate tonight, although it was nowhere near as warm as yesterday. In fact, frost was forming on our jackets and knapsacks on the sidelines between points. It was fairly spectacular to play ultimate as the moon slowly reddened overhead. Very Hallowe’en-esque.

Oh yeah, and we won.

Kris caught up with my blog today. In the discussion that ensued concerning what exactly teh yay meant, and why it had anything to do with her returning from Germany, we mutually decided that she shouldn’t go away for so long again because my conversational and literary skills get pwned when I end up talking only to cats for the better part of a month.

I would like to extend to you an invitation to the pants party.

When a spanking has been delivered on the ultimate pitch, it has traditionally not been the Turf Toads collecting the signature. Well, we got out the paddle tonight, I’ll tell ya, much to the chagrin of our opponents, the Party Pants. Truth be told, the weather was so fantastic — how often do we get a warm night at this time of year? — that I wished the game hadn’t ended so quickly.

Years later, a doctor will tell me I have an I.Q. of 48 and that I am considered mentally retarded.

Anchorman’s not very high brow (and I am?), but dammit if Will Ferrell doesn’t make me laugh. I nearly peed myself during the News Team rumble.

My fantasy football team was holding a thin lead going into Monday Night Football this week. My opponent had two high scoring Broncos left to play, so I thought I was as good as beaten…until Denver forgot to show up.

So, at the midway point of the current fantasy football season, I already have more wins than I managed all last season.

And the karma vultures begin to circle overhead…

Nonagenarian

Nonagenarian is not a word you get to use very often, be it in casual conversation or otherwise. A big huzzah! goes out to my grandfather, Ray, who turned 90 today. My parents held a big brunch in his honor, at which I got to hear new stories about how my Dad used to get into trouble when he was young. Those stories, unlike the rest of us, never get old.

CFS is having a retreat in a few weeks, so I finally bit the bullet and bought myself a new laptop. No real impressions yet, all I know at this point is that it boots, and that the screen in very nice. I’ll post more about my adventures getting linux running on this puppy as I go.

Glückliche rückkehr

My wife is back from Europe == teh yay!

Saturday morning was gorgeous. There was still some frost in the shade when James and I arrived at Camp Fortune to play a round of disc golf after an early brunch at the Pump. The course was freshly mowed, yet I still managed to almost lose a disc — a disc that only traveled 30ft at that! Who knew that hammering into the wind was a bad idea? In my defense, I teed off first on the hole in question, and the tee is in a depression where there is no wind. At least my throw cleared the creek. In the end, I eeked out a one-shot victory, but we also forgot to score one hole, so cum grano salis and all that.

The reason she’d never heard of me was because I was famous

Forgot to mention the world’s windiest ultimate game on Sunday, in which I threw all manner of bad throws, including a marginally sub-orbital hammer that somehow still ended up being caught for a point. (Thanks, Nat)

No such excuses for losing tonight’s game — we (the Turf Toads) just plain stank it up.

The Slashdot interview with Neal Stephenson is pretty entertaining, but he does tend to go on, and on, and on…much like his recent works. Of course, the large part of his point is his disconnect with the literary review process, but anyone who has struggled through the Baroque Cycle can confirm his longwindedness.

More updates from Scotland and Karen…actually, scratch that. Karen has her own blog now, so she can update you directly, should she so choose. From the content of her recent entries, I think she will fit in nicely with the rest of the Drunken Posse. :)

I’ve added some pictures from my recent trip to Italy to the gallery.

Karen finally got herself a landline, so I was treated to a phone call this morning from my wife who is still in Scotland and, not surprisingly, still enjoying herself.

Met up with Jeff and had dinner at Wasabi in the Market on Friday night. Wasabi’s bento box remains one of the best deals in sushi in Ottawa.

Speaking of sushi, I was only recently made aware of the new Health Protection and Promotion Act, REGULATION 562 which was just passed in Ontario, which makes it illegal to serve fish as sushi that has not been frozen first. If this offends you as much as it does me, I urge you to visit the web site for the Toronto Area Sushi Society and sign their petition.
